More than race or ideology, language separates us.

  1. These could be a continuation of the "solitude" theme as well. Not understanding local language does isolate a person, a community, a generation. There are myriad language barriers, from the hearing impaired to someone recently moved to a different country. From hearing a strong accent to that language my teenagers have that defeats and isolates many in my generation ... me in particular.

  2. I especially love the profile of the beautiful black man. There is something about that picture which moves me.

I see the sharp contrasts of color and line. Beautifully done.

I do miss seeing your little dog in this one! Give the little "person" a pat from a big fan!

  3. Yes it's true ... but even though the images, gestures, smiles ... they are bringing ... after all they are universal languages.
    Your pictures are an example

  4. These are wonderful images! Well, I think we shall focus on what unites us, not what divides us.

  9. What great portraits, I love these types of pictures where they just capture the moment. Not posing and smiling for the camera.

  10. I like how boldly the head profiles are cropped. And the second image is interesting because the person looks kind of restricted by the chain and by the edge of the picture. They are all terrific.

  11. When language is a barrier, only an observant person would be able to read/know the other person's thoughts and feelings. This are not your usual shots but nice and different for a change :-D

  12. even when we speak the same language, language sure can separate us. Learning to listen, wanting to understand these are essential to connecting through language!

  28. I'm not sure about language being the most divisive thing...we have an awful lot of racial hatred in the U.S. and all speak the same language...

    Powerful photos, though.

  29. Language can only divide us if the speaker chooses to. Even with different tongues, language can unite. Great group of photos!

  31. Very beautiful! I agree since Babylon - the language is a great challenge - but isn't it great when we overcome challenges step by step!

  32. "hollow roll of syllables, dying words"

"I who cannot live among people"

"whoever has not choked on a word,
    and i am telling you,
whoever knows how to help oneself
    - especially with words -
    cannot be helped".

a poet dear to me, Ingeborg Bachmann, wrote (still wrote, despite everything).

yet there is a silence in these images, so heavy, that falls upon my heart.

    (thank you)

Your words are only true if I deem them to be so.
